Rapid City Council passes second reading of medical cannabis ordinance

RAPID CITY, S.D. – The Rapid City Council voted Monday to approve medical cannabis rules. The council approved the ordinance 8-1 with council member Bill Evans voting no.

The ordinance will limit the number of dispensaries to about 15 within city limits and will also give businesses one year to get up and running.

The ordinance will also dictate where medical cannabis dispensaries can be located. They will be allowed to open in locations that at least 1,000 feet away from public or private schools and at least 500 feet away from churches, public parks and playground, childcare centers, and property that is zoned residential.

The city’s Legal and Finance Committee had initially approved the rules last week.

The rules will go into effect October 2.
